Body repair page #1 |
We first gutted what was left of the car and bagged tagged everything that was still
recognizable. We then created a pile for everything left that was not recognizable(big
pile). The First thing we had to do was stabilize the shell. We used two columns for this to spread the car back open. This allowed the doors to close and the top to latch. The engine and the transmission were removed at this point. The car was then elavated to gain access to the undersides. This was not an easy thing as the car had the strength of a wet noddle. People who have done this before advise replaceing one piece at a time. We could not follow this advise because too much was bad so we broke the work up in to three sections. We started from the middle and worked outwards towards the ends. The remains of the rocker boxes ,torque boxes, and floorpans and front rail extensions were cut out, The tunnel rot was cut out and patched and the rocker panels were repaired with patch panels The inner rocker boxes were then fitted into position and tack welded. (Please see sheet metal prep and issues) with close reference to the door openings (edge to edge) The car was then releveled front to back and side to side. This was the first time something solid could be maneuvered. The reinforcement pans and the frame rail extension together were clamped into place. measurements were taken and then pieces were welded. The frame rail was biased 1/8" outward at the re-pans to line up the front to the frame rails. |
