Body repair page # 7
Next is the repair of the cowl vents. This is the area that starts the whole rusting problem. This panel was never painted and the water entering the top cover panel started rusting away the car many years ago. The factory sprayed some body color down the one center grill to give a finished appearance but neglected the two side areas around the top hats.
We are going to cut out the rotted steel and patch in new steel. Since this is a driver and not a show piece, we will not be buying replacement partial inner cowl panels. This will save us about a $100 and its doubtful anyone will ever have their head stuck under our dash board. The next page will show the prep, cutting blasting(sand not dynamite even though I'm tempted), and reconstructive surgery.

The Mustang Web site has a great reprint from Mustangs and Ford magazine showing the whole job. I was very disapointed with the Mustang How -to volumes one and two. These are reprints from Mustang  Monthly magazine articles and show you how to fix the cowls in shortcut fashion.

The link to the mustang web site has stopped working. I will leave the link in case it starts to work.
